Empowering Local Media

Internews has been working in Sri Lanka since 2005, providing information services to vulnerable communities and delivering training to both established journalists and young trainees. Internews works closely with local organisations and the Government to harness the power of media and information to help people develop a peaceful and prosperous Sri Lanka.

Pilgrimages, faith and the ignored

In the latest cross production conducted by Internews, journalists from East and South met up in the city of Kataragama, in the southern coast of Sri Lanka. They covered a range of stories including the long pilgrimage that people make on foot to to Kovil, and the annual festivities at the Kovil itself, including the processions.

Journalists also paid a visit to the local villages surrounding Lunugamwehera, and explored the stories of those who have been forgotten and ignored by the central administrative structures, to be retold on Perambara, Local Voices,  and Vidivai Nokki.
