Empowering Local Media

Internews has been working in Sri Lanka since 2005, providing information services to vulnerable communities and delivering training to both young and mid-career journalists. Internews works closely with local organisations and the Government to harness the power of media and information to help people develop a peaceful and prosperous Sri Lanka.

Real Voices

Real Voices was a radio program produced at each of Internews’ media houses in Sri Lanka from 2006 to 2008. It was a comprehensive radio program dealing with community and social issues and current events available to local audiences. Programs explored local problems, and frequently had a focus on discussing potential solutions to those problems.

Programs from each media house consider local audience concerns – stories from the east are broadcast to the east and stories from the south, to the south. And Real Voices also shared stories across different locations, languages, and communities. That means audiences in the south could hear stories from the east, and eastern listeners could hear stories from southern communities. In a country divided by community and geography, Real Voices told stories about issues that affect everyone.

Real Voices have now evolved in to Local Voices, and are currently functioning through the East and South Media Houses. An archive of Real Voices can be seen here.
