Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services Ministry said 9,920 IDPs were released from the Vavuniya camps on September 11. Meanwhile, 200 IDPs are to be assisted by Jaffna Chamber of Commerce to find jobs and low interest loans after resettlement. In Vavuniya, the youth in Ramanathan will be provided with a stage to show off their talents and the Education Ministry has provided work books for IDP O/L students.

9,920 IDPs released on September 11- Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services Ministry
9,920 people were released from the Vavuniya camps to Jaffna, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, and Ampara on September 11, Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services Ministry said. Meanwhile, around 8,000 people continue to be in Jaffna welfare camps.
Health Director for the IDPs, Dr. Easwara Kottegoda said: “Another 2,500 people will be resettled in Jaffna in the near future. We will look after their health issues. At the same time, we have enough health facilities in Batticaloa and Trincomalee camps.”
Sivaraja, one of the doctors who works in the camps, said: “We cannot manage if more people arrive. Then we would need more doctors, nurses and facilities.”
Jaffna IDPs to be assisted by Chamber of Commerce after resettlement
The Jaffna Chamber of Commerce will be assisting 200 IDPs by providing them with new jobs and low interest loans after they are resettled, the chamber’s CEO, Mr. Jeyarajasingham, said.
Disaster Relief Services Minister, Ameer Ali explained that the government is in the process of developing the north and east and many foreign investors are interested in investing in agriculture and industrial development.
Popular tourist spots Pasikuda and Nilaveli in the east have been developed and land prices have increased. Work has also been undertaken on roads in Vaharai, Batticaloa and Pottuvil.
Business for Peace Alliance (BPA), an organisation involved in strengthening chambers of commerce islandwide, will coordinate with foreign countries and investors to promote investment in Sri Lanka. Coordinator of BPA Ms. Dharshini Karthigesu said all regions will be developed by strengthening the regional chambers of commerce.
Stage for cultural activities to be opened at Ramanathan relief village.
Many students and young people have recovered from mental health issues and stress due to cultural programmes organised by the National Youth Council (NYC) said NYC Northern Province Director, Mr. T. Sivadhatsanamurthi.
A stage for the cultural activities of the IDP youth will be opened this Wednesday at the Ramanathan Relief village. The National Youth Council has been organizing several programmes to bring out the talents of the youth and to help them recover from stress.
Director, National Youth Council of the Northern Province, Mr. T. Sivadhatsanamurthi said: “Students and school leavers will be able to use the stage. They will be given musical instruments and many of the displaced students have directly told us that they are mentally better due to such programmes.”
A similar stage was built by the council in Kadhigamar relief village. Plans are also being made to construct stages in Ananthakumaraswamy, Arunachalam Relief villages and in Zone 5.
Education Ministry provides work books for IDP O/L students
IDP students sitting for their O/L examinations will be provided with work books for their preparation. Vavuniya Zonal Education Director, Mrs. Ranjani Oswald said: “This work books will be useful to the IDP students for their examination. They will be guided by their teachers.”
Education Coordinator for the Displaced Students, Mr. P. Parameshwaran said: “Four examination centers will be arranged for the IDP students. Each center will accommodate 1,000 students.”
