Displaced orphan and unaccompanied children

A further 34 unaccompanied children in IDP camps are to be accommodated by the SOS organisation while in Ampara, selected elders from the Eastern province will be recognised and thanked for their service to the community on Elder’s Day.

SOS to accommodate a further 34 unaccompanied IDP children

A further 34 unaccompanied children in IDP camps are to be cared for by the SOS organization. Deputy Country Director, SOS, Divahar Ratnathurai said that 16 children have been reunited with their parents by the organisation and five youths, who are over 18, have joined vocational training centres. Currently the SOS is looking after around 183 children.

Ratnathurai said: “Parents come here and inquire about their children. We hand them over once they identify them. We produce them in courts through the Child Care and Probation Department.

Special function in Ampara to thank elders on October 25

Elders from each of the 45 divisions in the Eastern Province are to be thanked for their service to the community on October 25, which marks Elders’ Day. In Ampara, a special function has been organised to recognise elders who have rendered innumerable services to the people.

Director, Social Services Department, Eastern Province, Nagarasa Manivannan said: “Elders who have rendered services to the people in many ways will be identified and will be felicitated. There are 45 Divisional Secretariats in the Eastern Province. There will be one person selected from each division.”
