Displaced students in Vavuniya camp

Displaced O/L students will be given special classes by a team appointed by Education Ministry. Meanwhile, 6,000 youths from Jaffna have been recruited to the police department and will be assigned to the north after training. In Vavuniya, IDP youths are being given vocational training. The government says that the transportation of fish from the east is being carried out without any problems.

Government appoints special team to educate IDP O/L students

A team has been appointed to conduct special classes IDP students in Vavuniya who would be sitting for the G.C.E. Ordinary Level exam this year. Education Minister, Susil Premajayanth said the team will be headed by the ministry’s Coordinator for IDP education Mr. Thanikasalampillai. “Generally around 6,000 sit for the exam from both districts. I believe that because of the situation that prevailed in Kilinochchi and Mulaitivu, some students could not sit for the examination for the past few years. Therefore, this year we have around 10,000 students sitting for the examinations.”

Chairman of the special team Mr. Thanikasalampillai visited Vavuniya yesterday to study the situation in IDP camps. He said that he will submit the findings to the education Ministry and that the Minister would take steps to conduct special classes according to the report. He said: “UNICEF has spent around Rs. 1.5 million to support the students. The students have been given study kit.”

6,000 youths from Jaffna recruited to the police department

The police department has recruited 6,000 youths from Jaffna and Police media spokesman Senior DIG Mr. Nimal Mediwaka said the youths will be assigned to police stations in the north after the training.

Secretary, Public Administration and Home Affairs Ministry, D. Dissanayake said the government has taken all the measures to establish civil administration in the north including Mannar. “All Divisional Secretariats in the Vanni will be established after de-mining activities are complete,” he said.

Vocational training provided for youth in welfare centres

Training workshops being conducted in three welfare centres could be expanded to other centres if organizations are willing to provide funds, said Deputy Director, Vocational Training Department, Vavuniya Mr. Kamalanathan.

The Vocational and Technical Training Ministry has commenced a series of workshops for youngsters in Kathirgamar, Ananthakumaraswamy and Arunachalam welfare centres.

The youths who are being trained will be involved in the development of the north, according to Deputy Director, Vocational Training Department, Vavuniya Mr. Kamalanathan.

Young people in Kathirgamar welfare centre will be given training in wood carving from October 1.

Mr. Kamalanathan said the workshops could be expanded to other welfare centres if organizations were interested in providing funds.

Transportation of fish from the east being carried out smoothly

The government says the transportation of fish from the east to other parts of the country is taking place without any problems.

Deputy Minister, Fisheries and aquatic Resources, Neomal Perera said the transportation of fish to Colombo has been carried out smoothly.

He said: “They can transport fish to Colombo without any problems. The only thing is the consignments will be inspected by the police and the security force personnel and will be sealed afterwards. They are brought to Colombo, Matara and Kandy. However, they cannot unload halfway while transporting.

Sinnathamby Azagudurai, a fisherman in Kaddaiparichchan said that he and his fellow workers continue to face losses due to a lack of proper fishing equipment.
