Empowering Local Media

Internews has been working in Sri Lanka since 2005, providing information services to vulnerable communities and delivering training to both young and mid-career journalists. Internews works closely with local organisations and the Government to harness the power of media and information to help people develop a peaceful and prosperous Sri Lanka.

About Trincomalee Media House

Trincomalee Media House is established by Internews and funded by Dutch Embassy to enhance the Trincomalee District journalists’ I.T. knowledge to enable them to disseminate information with press. It was declared opened by Netherlands Ambassador in Sri Lanka on June 02, 2010.  The prominent politicians, Government officials, Internews Sri Lanka Country Director and other officials in the circle.

Since the opening of the Internews, it has provided services to the journalists’ community in the Trincomalee district in many useful and skilful ways where the beneficiaries; the journalists, have gained knowledge in using the cyber tech facilities in a professional manner.

Journalists are being trained in I.T. skills, advanced media training, using twitter, and blog, face book, video editing and e mail facilities.  Apart from this, they are socially and professionally benefitted through Forum with Government officials, Ministers, Security forces and public.  This forum plays a major factor in obtaining news from the above and focuses them as trustworthy people among the above officials.  The forum removes the suspicion between the journalists and the government officials, security forces and public.

Also, TMH is providing I.T. training to the underprivileged youths selected from Church youth groups, NGOs, Government departments and Security Forces as a gesture.  On some occasion, youths come from faraway places are provided with one time lunch and snacks while other NGOs are providing them residence and other meals.  This kind of services has created a very good impact on TMH and its donor as a Good Samaritan.
